The Vision and Mission of Djarragun College

Djarragun College recognises the importance of competency in literacy for the future of indigenous people. Progress in indigenous welfare and, indeed, cross-cultural relations will come only with improvements to educational attainment and the real rather than rhetorical empowerment that this brings. In the development of our vision the College continually reflects on the words of the Archbishop of Brisbane:

While we are committed to the dignity of tradition, Djarragun College is a lively and dynamic place of learning for both children and staff. We strive to develop the intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual dimensions of young people and children.

In a supportive Christian environment, Djarragun College aims to provide excellence in teaching and learning within a holistic and integrated curriculum. We strive to prepare students to become competent, compassionate people who are able to contribute meaningfully to the global community.

Our Mission is to foster the holistic development of indigenous students by implementing the following:

  • Values and virtues education based on Christian beliefs
  • A responsive and relevant curriculum
  • Respect for tradition, promotion of dignity and skills to teach independence
  • Holistic education that focuses on environmental and social responsibility
  • Enhanced accessibility to life experiences, job opportunities and social interaction.

Djarragun College is a co-educational school of excellence, which fosters the holistic education of indigenous Australian students. The school values a moral and spiritual view of life that prizes the highest standards of personal character with a Christian ethic of service and concern for others.

The holistic education the school offers aims to develop students intellectually, physically, emotionally, socially and ethically in a Christian setting. Through the provision of a caring, secure and supportive environment the College seeks to develop in students:

  • A love of learning and a desire to develop their abilities to the fullest extent;
  • Critical and effective thinking and problem solving skills;
  • The ability to take responsibility for their own learning;
  • Respect and concern for the natural environment;
  • An awareness and understanding of cultural heritage;

In addition, the College strives to promote and foster:

  • The life skills related to healthy life styles;
  • An environment that nurtures and promotes student self esteem and self confidence;
  • Independent behaviours in students and an awareness of co-dependency and the implications for such behaviour;
  • An environment of respect for God, respect for self, respect for others and respect for property;
  • The development of spiritual strength through the formation of a framework of values which will support students through both prosperous and adverse conditions;
  • Opportunities for students to develop a work ethic and to gain skills that will lead to jobs.
